The Federal Government has assured Nigerians that the current economic hardship will soon be a thing of the past.
Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, gave the assurance during an interview on Channels Television on Wednesday. He acknowledged the rising concerns over hunger and hardship across the country but said the administration of President Bola Tinubu is making steady progress toward economic recovery.
Idris highlighted some key interventions of the government, including over 900,000 beneficiaries of the Presidential Conditional Grant and Loan Scheme, 300,000 student loan recipients, and the clearance of more than ₦10 billion in foreign exchange debts.
Despite these efforts, the country continues to face mounting economic pressure, with food prices and the cost of living still on the rise. Responding to questions on when citizens would begin to feel the positive impact of government policies, the Minister said:
“The pain will end soon. In fact, it’s already beginning to subside slightly. If you compare food prices today with those of a year ago, you can see some changes, especially in the price of rice and other staples.”
He admitted that the government has not yet achieved its goal but insisted there is measurable progress.
“We’re not there yet, but there’s steady movement toward the prosperity President Tinubu has promised. It won’t happen overnight, but international rating agencies are already acknowledging improvements in our economic outlook.”
Idris further clarified that neither he nor the President had claimed Nigeria’s problems are over but stressed that the administration is committed to addressing the challenges.
“What I can say is that we are on a gradual path to economic recovery. It’s not instant, but we are moving in the right direction.”
