A human rights organisation has called on the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission to open a formal investigation into allegations that Jordan Ezenwo Nyesom-Wike, son of Federal Capital Territory Minister Nyesom Wike, was involved in a $2.1 million fraud linked to land transactions in Abuja.
Advocacy for Human Rights and Cultural Values for Development Initiatives, in a petition signed by its Executive Director Sambo Jibril and addressed to the EFCC Executive Chairman, said businessman Safwan Garba submitted a complaint to the commission in December 2025. The petition alleged fraud, obtaining by false pretence, criminal misappropriation and conversion.
The group said it was informed that the EFCC invited Garba and took a written statement from him. Several months later, however, the organisation expressed concern that Jordan had not been invited and that the commission had not publicly shown that a full investigation was under way.
“We are concerned by information that, notwithstanding the passage of several months since the petition was submitted, the Commission has allegedly not invited the person against whom the allegations were made,” the organisation stated. It stressed that the filing of a petition does not establish guilt and that Jordan is entitled to the presumption of innocence. Its concern, it said, was whether the EFCC applies the same investigative standards to everyone regardless of political status, wealth or influence.
The group urged the commission to determine the status of the petition, commence a comprehensive investigation if the allegations disclose sufficient grounds, invite Jordan or any other relevant person in accordance with due process, or close the matter and inform the complainant if no offence is disclosed.
The EFCC petition is tied to a civil suit, No. CV/008/2026, before the High Court of the Federal Capital Territory in Abuja. Safwan Garba GY and GY Global Oil and Gas Nigeria Limited are suing Jordan over an alleged $2.1 million land deal. The claimants say they met him in London and later approached him in Abuja for help acquiring land. They claim he agreed to facilitate the purchase of 30 hectares in Katampe and another 30 hectares in Guzape and demanded $2.1 million as a facilitation fee, of which $2 million was supposedly intended for his father and $100,000 for himself.
They further allege that the money was paid in cash, that Jordan failed to deliver the land or refund the sum, and that a joint venture agreement dated 17 October 2025 required them to contribute $4.2 million (or its naira equivalent of N6.3 billion) for the construction of 24 six-bedroom duplexes while Jordan was to provide the land.
Jordan has denied the claims in court. He said he had no relationship with the claimants, did not receive the money, and that the signature on a document acknowledging receipt was forged. He testified that he was not in Nigeria on 26 September 2025, the date the claimants first said the payment was made, because he was on a British Airways flight from Abuja to London that morning using his American passport. The court earlier ordered him to produce the passport. He described the allegations as an attempt to blackmail his father and extort money.
A police investigation report attached to Jordan’s filings stated that the FCT Police Command found insufficient evidence that Garba had given him the money and recommended that the claimant be charged with alleged defamation, giving false information and attempted extortion. The claimants have maintained their case. They also alleged that when Garba approached the FCT minister on 24 December 2025 seeking recovery of the money, Wike accused him of lying and had him taken to the FCT Commissioner of Police, where he was treated as a suspect and later released on bail. Jordan has denied those claims as well.
The civil suit has been adjourned to 1, 2 and 14 December 2026 for continuation of trial.
The human rights group emphasised that its call should not be read as a finding of guilt. It said the EFCC should base its decisions on evidence, law and established procedure rather than the political standing or influence of anyone involved.
