Senator Ali Ndume, who represents Borno South in the National Assembly, has distanced himself from the recent endorsement of President Bola Tinubu for a second term by All Progressives Congress (APC) governors.
Speaking on Sunday Politics, a Channels Television programme, Ndume said he does not support the early endorsement, recalling how former President Goodluck Jonathan was backed by 22 Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) governors in 2015, yet lost the presidential election to Muhammadu Buhari of the APC.
Last month, 22 APC governors unanimously endorsed Tinubu as the party’s candidate for the 2027 presidential election during a meeting at the Presidential Villa in Abuja. Ndume, however, disclosed that he left the venue after realizing the event had turned into a platform for political endorsement rather than the summit he initially came to attend.
“I was there, but that was not why I went. I attended for a summit, and when I realized it had become an endorsement gathering, I quietly left,” he said.
According to the senator, his departure should not be interpreted as a sign of disloyalty to the APC. “The majority had their way, but a few of us felt it was inappropriate,” he said.
Ndume warned against overconfidence within the party, drawing parallels with past political missteps. “This is not the first time this has happened. It happened to Jonathan. He had 22 governors behind him. Money was spent. The election was even postponed. But in the end, he lost woefully,” he noted.
“Politicians may decamp, but the voters don’t follow them blindly. We’re not learning from history. I pity Mr. President,” he added.
