Elder statesman and one of Nigeria’s surviving First Republic senators, Suemo Chia, has made a touching public appeal to meet with the Governor of Benue State, Rev. Fr. Hyacinth Iormem Alia.
Speaking with visible emotion during a thanksgiving mass at NKST Church, High Level, Makurdi, held to mark the second anniversary of Governor Alia’s administration, the octogenarian expressed a deep, personal desire to offer his counsel to the governor before his time on earth ends.
Senator Chia, now in his 80s, was seen seated quietly at the church entrance, hoping for a chance to meet the governor. However, due to heavy security presence and the large crowd of worshippers and supporters, he was unable to gain access.
“I cannot see well again,” he said in a frail but resolute voice. “I have come to see Alia. I saw him once, and when I tried to visit him at the Government House, they blocked me—as if I was seeking a political appointment.”
The former senator, who has offered guidance to several past Benue governors, clarified that his intention was not political, but a personal calling rooted in wisdom and experience.
“I want to offer my advice to him before I die,” he stated.
