Isaac Idahosa, the 2023 vice presidential candidate of the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP), has called for strict accountability measures against the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) and public officials over electoral failures.
Speaking on The Morning Brief, a Channels Television program on Wednesday, Idahosa stressed the need for consequences to deter repeated electoral misconduct.
“We don’t punish anybody for what they do; there are no consequences, so the cycle continues,”he said. “INEC makes mistakes, and nobody holds them accountable, so it keeps happening. Without consequences for actions or inactions, misconduct will persist because there’s no accountability”.
Ahead of the 2023 general elections, INEC introduced the Result Viewing Portal (IReV) and the Bimodal Voter Registration System (BVAS) to enhance transparency. However, technical glitches during the polls led to criticism from politicians, raising concerns about the effectiveness of these innovations.
Idahosa also lamented the growing influence of individuals over institutions, arguing that this undermines governance.
“Some people in government have become more powerful than institutions, and this is affecting our democracy,” he stated.
He further decried the role of money in politics, warning that financial influence continues to erode the integrity of the electoral process.
