Amid a resurgence of deadly violence in Plateau State, the Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, has ordered the immediate deployment of advanced tactical units to Bokkos Local Government Area.
The directive, announced Wednesday by Force Public Relations Officer, CSP Olumuyiwa Adejobi, comes in response to what he described as “a disturbing surge in brutal attacks and killings” across affected communities since March 28.
“The Nigeria Police Force remains fully committed to restoring peace and ensuring the safety of all residents in Plateau State,” Adejobi stated. “This decisive move reflects our resolve to bring the perpetrators of these heinous crimes to justice.”
The deployment includes specialized personnel from the Police Mobile Force and Special Intervention Squad, as well as aerial surveillance drones, armored carriers, and helicopters.
Deputy Inspector-General of Police in charge of Operations, Kwazhi Yakubu, has been assigned to lead the intervention. DIG Kwazhi arrived in Plateau on April 8 and paid a courtesy visit to Governor Caleb Mutfwang. During the visit, he conveyed the IGP’s condolences to the families of victims and reaffirmed the police’s commitment to finding a sustainable, long-term solution to the crisis.
The most recent wave of attacks began on March 28, when armed assailants stormed several villages in Bokkos, killing dozens and injuring many more. The violence has continued intermittently, plunging local communities into fear and mourning.
This latest episode follows a similar pattern of unrest in the region. In December 2023, over 150 people were killed in coordinated attacks across Bokkos and Barkin Ladi LGAs, prompting national outrage and military intervention.
Adejobi urged residents to remain vigilant and cooperate with security agencies by providing credible intelligence. “We need the cooperation of the people to succeed in this crucial operation,” he said.
