In a decisive move to curb unprofessional conduct within the Imo State Police Command, Commissioner of Police (CP) Aboki Danjuma has issued a stern directive to residents: “If any police officer asks you for money, that’s extortion, tell them ‘NO.’ Similarly, any policeman that stops you to check your phone, don’t allow it.”
This statement came during a statewide checkpoint inspection conducted by CP Danjuma and his team on June 17, 2025, aimed at eliminating extortion, harassment, and unlawful practices by police officers.
During the inspection, CP Danjuma emphasized the command’s zero-tolerance policy for misconduct, specifically warning officers against extorting money or conducting unauthorized phone searches.
“I have warned my officers to be civil, polite, and professional,” he stated, underscoring the need for officers to adhere to ethical standards. To ensure accountability, he provided the public with the Command’s Complaint Response Unit line, 08148024755, urging Imolites and motorists to report erring officers promptly.
The inspection, detailed in a press release by the Imo State Police Command on June 17, was part of ongoing efforts to entrench professionalism and boost public confidence.
CP Danjuma’s team conducted on-the-spot assessments of checkpoint operations and officers’ interactions with the public, reinforcing that extortion, harassment, and illegal phone checks would face severe consequences.
On June 18, seven officers were arrested for alleged extortion and harassment of motorists, as reported on X, highlighting the command’s swift action against violators. CP Danjuma called on residents to resist unlawful demands and report misconduct using the dedicated complaint line. “No one should feel intimidated by any policeman asking for money or trying to check their phone. It is illegal, and we are here to protect you,” he affirmed.
The command has intensified internal monitoring, with supervisory officers tasked with ensuring compliance at checkpoints. Residents have welcomed CP Danjuma’s proactive measures, expressing optimism for improved police-citizen relations. “This is a bold step. Knowing we can report issues directly gives us confidence,” said Chidi Okoro, a commercial driver in Owerri.
The Imo State Police Command reiterated that inspections will continue to ensure transparency and accountability. CP Danjuma’s directives and the provision of the Complaint Response Unit line (08148024755) signal a renewed commitment to professionalism and public trust.
