Former Imo State Deputy Governor, Prince Eze Madumere, has pledged to overhaul the healthcare system in Owerri Zone and wipe out maternal and infant mortality if elected senator in the 2027 general elections.
The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) candidate for Imo East Senatorial District made the commitment on Monday while speaking with journalists in Owerri, the state capital.
Madumere, an American-trained technocrat and human capital development expert, described the continued loss of mothers and newborns in the zone as a preventable tragedy that can no longer be ignored. He stressed that no woman should face danger while giving birth.
“Every mother in our rural communities deserves a qualitative, affordable and accessible healthcare delivery system. No woman should face danger while delivering a baby. Every life matters and we are going to work assiduously to fix the health sector in Owerri Zone,” he declared.
The former deputy governor identified critical challenges, including shortage of primary healthcare facilities, lack of skilled birth attendants, inadequate emergency obstetric care, and limited access to antenatal and postnatal services. He promised to tackle these problems head-on once elected.
Madumere said his administration would prioritise the upgrade and equipping of Primary Healthcare Centres in every ward across the zone. He also vowed to ensure continuous training and retention of professional health personnel, particularly nurses and rural health workers, to boost productivity.
Drawing from his international exposure, the PDP hopeful noted that Nigeria’s poor ranking on global maternal and infant mortality indices demands urgent action. He insisted that health remains the foundation of every meaningful development.
“As someone with international exposure and experience, I am abreast with the healthcare needs of my people. I appreciate the fact that health is wealth and every development revolves around health. Together, we will create the conducive environment where the health of the citizenry occupies prime position,” he added.
Madumere linked his plans to his “Journey of Grace” blueprint, describing it as a comprehensive agenda that speaks to the yearnings of the people of Owerri Zone.
He called on stakeholders, the electorate and the entire citizenry of the zone to join him on the journey, insisting that a new Owerri Zone is possible by the special grace of God.
“I call on the electorate, stakeholders and the entire citizens of Owerri Zone to develop a positive mindset and jump into this train which is heading to the right destination, where our heart desires will be delivered speedily. I, Prince Eze Madumere, have done it before and I am set to rekindle same,” he said.
