The Imo State Commissioner of Police, CP Aboki Danjuma, has ordered a thorough investigation into the gruesome murder of Mr. Chibugo Amadi, a father of eight, who was allegedly killed by his kinsmen over a land dispute in Umuora village, Isiala Mbano Local Government Area of the state.
According to a statement from the command, the Police Commissioner acted upon a petition submitted by the bereaved family and has directed the Homicide Section of the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) to uncover the circumstances surrounding the incident.
Speaking to our correspondent in Owerri, the victim’s widow, Mrs. Chinonye Amadi, who was accompanied by three of her children, recounted the harrowing events that led to her husband’s death. She alleged that her husband was lured back to the village under the pretense of a final settlement, only to be forcefully taken to Mkpacha Umuora, where he was brutally beaten to death.
“They stripped him naked and beat him with weapons until he collapsed and died in their hands,” she said tearfully.
Mrs. Amadi explained that the dispute began on April 3, 2025, following a disagreement between her husband and his younger brother, Ezemonye Amadi, over a parcel of land. The altercation reportedly escalated, with the deceased inflicting injuries on his brother. Fearing retaliation, Mr. Amadi fled the village.
In his absence, she said, the kinsmen convened a meeting, imposed a fine of ₦850,000 on him, and sold four of his plots of land at an undervalued price of ₦200,000 per plot, despite each plot being worth at least ₦1.5 million. The proceeds, according to her, were paid to Ezemonye as compensation for his injuries.
“Even after accepting all the decisions taken in his absence, my husband was deceived into returning, only to be tortured to death,” she added.
Corroborating her account, human rights activist and founder of the Stand for Humanity Foundation, Chidiebube Okeoma, condemned the act, describing it as premeditated murder. He disclosed that the perpetrators recorded the beating and circulated the videos on social media.
“The suspects, who can be clearly identified in the video clips, dumped the deceased at a hospital in Okwelle, Onuimo LGA, where doctors confirmed him dead. When his 18-year-old son arrived, they falsely claimed he fell from a tree,” Okeoma said.
He further revealed that the organization had taken up the case, and the petition submitted by their legal adviser, Chijioke Onwubuariri, has been formally acknowledged by the Police Commissioner.
Meanwhile, the spokesperson for the Imo State Police Command, ASP Henry Okoye, has assured the public that justice will be served and that no effort will be spared in bringing the culprits to book.
