Owerri — The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has ramped up preparations for the 2027 general elections, urging all key players in Imo State to collaborate in delivering peaceful, free, fair, and transparent polls.
At a one-day stakeholders’ forum held in Owerri, INEC’s Imo State Resident Electoral Commissioner, Christopher Ibezimako, called on political parties, security agencies, traditional rulers, religious leaders, and civil society organisations to work together to strengthen the electoral process.
Ibezimako stressed that successful elections depend on strict adherence to the Constitution, the Electoral Act, and INEC’s guidelines and revised timetable. He reminded participants that elections extend far beyond polling day, encompassing a series of interconnected activities that require the full commitment of all stakeholders. “Political parties must comply with electoral guidelines to reduce disputes and build public confidence,” he said.
The REC also appealed to security agencies to remain neutral and professional while safeguarding electoral officials, materials, and voters. He emphasised the importance of inter-agency collaboration for maintaining peace throughout the process.
INEC, he noted, has made substantial progress in implementing key activities under the revised election timetable, including voter education, engagement with political parties, training of election personnel, and logistics planning. The commission assured stakeholders of its dedication to transparency and improved service delivery.
Participants at the forum praised the ongoing voter registration and Permanent Voter Card (PVC) collection exercise but called for intensified voter education, especially in rural communities, to boost participation.
They further appealed to political actors to reject violence, focus on issue-based campaigns, and support all efforts aimed at ensuring the 2027 elections meet the highest standards of credibility.
The forum reflects INEC’s proactive steps to build consensus and address potential challenges ahead of the crucial polls in the South-East state.
