Rev. Fr. Kelvin Ugwu, a Catholic missionary priest serving in The Gambia, has called out Benue State Governor, Rev. Fr. Hyacinth Alia, over the persistent killings in the state.
Fr. Ugwu urged Governor Alia to show the same decisiveness in tackling the security crisis as he reportedly did in stopping the visit of Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi, to the state.
His comments follow Sunday’s deadly attack by suspected armed herders on communities in Gwer West and Apa Local Government Areas of Benue State, where at least 43 people were killed. The assault came less than a week after similar attacks in the same region.
In a strongly worded Facebook post on Tuesday, Fr. Ugwu criticised the governor for repeatedly taking to social media to announce the number of casualties rather than concrete steps taken to prevent further bloodshed.
“Dear Governor, Fr. Hyacinth Iormem Alia, one of the primary reasons people voted for you is because you’re a priest, even though currently suspended. They believed you would be different. It’s for their sake I speak,” he wrote.
“It’s not a badge of honour to constantly post the number of butchered citizens on Facebook. Announce, instead, those you’ve apprehended. Be proactive, not reactive. Just as you intercepted Peter Obi’s visit to Benue, you can also intercept the killers—if you truly want to.”
Fr. Ugwu’s remarks have sparked widespread debate, with many echoing his call for urgent and effective security measures in the embattled state.
