The Rivers State chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) has stated that the suspended state governor, Siminalayi Fubara, cannot escape accountability for his actions by joining the party.
Speaking to journalists in Abuja on Tuesday, the party’s Caretaker Committee Chairman in Rivers State, Tony Okocha, clarified that Fubara’s suspension and the call for a state of emergency in the state were based solely on his conduct, not political affiliations.
“Even if Fubara decides to join the APC, it doesn’t change anything. His sins won’t suddenly be forgiven just because he comes into our party,” Okocha stated.
“You can’t just jump into the APC and expect automatic redemption. That would turn the party into a safe haven for those guilty of misconduct, hoping to be pardoned through reconciliation. That’s not how we operate.”
Okocha emphasized that proper procedures must be followed for any defection, including starting at the ward level.
“He hasn’t even spoken to me. If he wants to join the APC, he must come through the front door—not the window. No one has informed us at the ward level about any move from him.”
Reacting to Governor Fubara’s recent Sallah visit to President Bola Tinubu, Okocha downplayed its political significance.
“How can I be worried about someone visiting the President during Sallah? That’s customary. We also saw the President with former Governor Osoba and even with Chief Nyesom Wike. We can’t dictate who the President meets with.”
Okocha further dismissed any reports suggesting reconciliation moves from Fubara, insisting there are no such efforts underway.
