In the early hours of Thursday, heavy military presence was observed at the popular Effurun and Ebrumede roundabouts in Uvwie Local Government Area of Delta State, effectively shutting down planned June 12 protests and forcing rights activists into hiding.
Our correspondent, who monitored the situation on ground, reported that no protesters were seen at the expected rally points.
Speaking on the development, human rights activist Israel Joe lamented the growing disconnect between the essence of Democracy Day and the current realities in the country. He noted that the ideals symbolized by the June 12 struggle and the legacy of M.K.O. Abiola have not been honored in practice.
“We are witnessing a level of suffering, hardship, and hunger that has never been seen before in Nigeria,” he said. “The town was militarized before daybreak. Ironically, those who were meant to lead the protest today were the same people who once opposed the #EndBadGovernance protest.”
Comrade Joe further revealed that some of these individuals are now distancing themselves from the government by resigning their political appointments.
“Many of them are resigning now because they are experiencing the same suffering they once ignored or denied,” he added.
Despite the tense situation, Joe expressed optimism that the Nigerian government can still redeem democracy and make it more than just a symbolic term, but a lived reality for the people.
