The Imo State Government has pledged to implement the recent recommendation of the National Judicial Council (NJC) concerning the appointment of an Acting Chief Judge for the State.
Speaking on behalf of the government, the Commissioner for Information, Public Orientation, and Strategy, Hon. Declan Emelumba, confirmed that the state had reviewed the resolutions reached at the NJC’s 108th meeting and would act accordingly.
He stated:
“His Excellency, Senator Hope Uzodimma, CON, Governor of Imo State, appointed Hon. Justice Theophilus Nzeukwu as Acting Chief Judge based on credible intelligence available to him at the time. These reports indicated that Justice Nzeukwu was the most senior judicial officer not weighed down by unresolved issues.”
According to Emelumba, the government had communicated this position, along with all supporting circumstances, to the NJC prior to the appointment.
“The Imo State Government holds the National Judicial Council in high regard and recognises its constitutional advisory role in matters of judicial appointments,” he said. “We respect the Council’s wisdom and accept its latest position.”
While maintaining that the appointment was made in good faith and within legal bounds, Emelumba affirmed that the government remains committed to due process and the rule of law.
“In demonstration of our respect for the judiciary and adherence to constitutional order, the Imo State Government is taking steps to implement the NJC’s decision,” he concluded.
