Gunmen in the early hours of Tuesday abducted a final-year student of the Federal University Birnin Kebbi (FUBK), Augustine Madubiya, and killed a local resident during a violent attack on an off-campus hostel.
The incident occurred around 3:00 a.m. at Istijaba Villa, a student lodge located in the Unguwar Jeji area. It has been reported that five armed men stormed the compound and confronted students who were sleeping outside due to the heat, demanding money.
When the students explained they had none, the assailants turned violent. Amid the chaos, a local resident, Malam Siddi Hussaini, who was nearby attending to his cattle, attempted to intervene but was fatally shot.
The attackers then abducted Augustine Madubiya, a 400-level Economics student. However, another student, Collaneous Steven, a 200-level Business Administration undergraduate, narrowly escaped.
Following the incident, FUBK Vice Chancellor, Professor Muhammad Zaiyan Umar, visited the scene alongside the Divisional Police Officer of Kalgo Division and officials of the Department of State Services (DSS).
Addressing concerned students, Professor Umar reaffirmed the university’s commitment to ensuring their safety. He also briefed the Kebbi State Governor, Nasir Idris, through the Secretary to the State Government and the Director of Security Services at the Cabinet Office.
The university management extended its gratitude to the District Head of Unguwar Jeji and the local community for their support and appealed for continued collaboration with security agencies to secure the release of the abducted student and prevent further incidents.
