The abducted students of Joseph Sarwuan Tarka University, Makurdi (JOSTUM), Benue State, have regained their freedom.
Gunmen had recently kidnapped four students from an off-campus hostel and taken them to an unknown location.
Confirming their release in a statement on Thursday, the spokesperson for the Benue State Police Command, Catherine Anene, said:
“On 26/02/2025 at about 21:34 hours, information was received from J.S. Tarka University, Makurdi, that students had been kidnapped within the school premises by unknown persons.
“A team of police officers was immediately deployed for investigation. During the probe, it was discovered that three female students were being held hostage by their abductors.
“On 3/3/2025, following continuous efforts to track the kidnappers, the victims were released at about 21:34 hours. They are currently receiving medical attention at Benue State University Teaching Hospital, Makurdi.”
While investigations continue, the Benue State Commissioner of Police, Steve H. Yabanet, commended the officers involved in the operation, particularly the IGP Intelligence Response Team from Abuja and other security agencies in Benue.
“He has pledged his commitment to ensuring the arrest of the perpetrators of this heinous crime,” the statement added.
