Barrister Julius Abure, National Chairman of the Labour Party, has affirmed that the party remains fully committed to helping the Ndigbo achieve the presidency in the future. Speaking at a rally in Abuja organized by Southeast party members ahead of the upcoming Area Council elections, Abure reiterated that the decision to zone the presidential ticket to the Southeast in the 2023 general election was made with the best interests of the Igbos at heart.
“Before the 2023 general election, I mistakenly believed that Igbos were not united. However, campaigning alongside Peter Obi across Nigeria revealed to me that the Igbos are among the most united, industrious, hardworking, and fearless people in the country. That’s why I have no regrets about zoning our presidential ticket to the Southeast to wipe away the tears of our people,” he said.
Abure urged Southeast leaders to seek broader realignment with other regions of the country, drawing parallels with the historical experience of the Yorubas, who eventually secured the presidency by building alliances beyond their zone. “For us to realize our national ambitions, it is imperative that we forge stronger bonds with other sections of Nigeria. Unity of purpose is essential,” he added.
He also assured party aspirants that the Labour Party would not impose candidates on them. “In our party, only our members will determine who becomes our candidate. Our primaries will be credible, free, and fair,” Abure emphasized, noting that the forthcoming election in the FCT will be a contest between the Labour Party and its competitors.
Abure’s comments underscore the Labour Party’s continued resolve to support the Ndigbo on their path to national leadership while promoting unity and collaborative progress across Nigeria.
