Lagos State Attorney-General and Commissioner for Justice, Mr Lawal Pedro, SAN, on Tuesday called on junior officers in the Ministry of Justice to prioritise integrity, professionalism and teamwork, describing effective justice delivery as a shared responsibility.
Pedro spoke in Ikeja at the opening of a two-day Junior Officers’ Workshop themed “From Potential to Performance: Empowering Junior Officers for Excellence in Service Delivery.”
He noted that the ministry’s success depends not only on lawyers but also on non-lawyer staff in administration, finance, accounts, human resources, information technology, records, library services, procurement, registry, research and public relations.
“Every officer has a role to play as the quality of your work contributes directly or indirectly to the effectiveness of the ministry,” Pedro said.
He reminded participants that public servants hold positions of trust and must manage government resources and information with honesty, transparency and accountability.
The Attorney-General also stressed teamwork, warning that delays in one unit can disrupt an entire department and ultimately affect service to the public. The workshop, he said, would cover competence and productivity, office etiquette, communication and emotional intelligence, professionalism, ethics and integrity, as well as health, wellbeing and career growth in the Lagos State Public Service.
He urged participants to engage fully, ask questions and apply the knowledge to improve performance in their departments.
Permanent Secretary and Solicitor-General Mr Hameed Oyenuga described the junior officers as the future workforce of the ministry. He called on them to convert potential into performance through responsibility, professionalism and dedication.
“Potential is only the beginning. It must be translated to performance. The quality of your work matters because your duties contribute directly to the effective administration of justice,” Oyenuga said. He advised officers to respect deadlines, maintain confidentiality, uphold integrity and actively pursue professional development through mentoring and learning from experienced colleagues.
Permanent Secretary of the Citizens’ Mediation Bureau, Mrs Aderinsola Olarewaju, compared the work of support staff to a chain, noting that a break in any link undermines the whole system. She urged participants to recognise the importance of their roles, maintain professionalism in all dealings and return to their units with practical knowledge that enhances performance.
The workshop included sessions on professionalism, ethics, health and wellness, career development, and interactive feedback.
