A Lagos Special Offences Court sitting in Ikeja has sentenced two oil marketers, Mamman Nasir Ali and Christian Taylor, to 14 years in prison each for their involvement in a ₦2.2 billion oil subsidy fraud.
Presiding judge, Justice Mojisola Dada, delivered the ruling on Tuesday following the re-arraignment of the duo and their company, Nasaman Oil Services Limited, on an amended 57-count charge. The fresh charges were filed after new evidence emerged during further investigations by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).
The amended charges built upon an earlier 49-count indictment, which included conspiracy to obtain money by false pretence, forgery, and the use of false documents. One of the charges detailed how the defendants allegedly conspired to fraudulently obtain ₦749,991,273.36 from the Federal Government under the Petroleum Support Fund by falsely claiming to have imported over 10 million litres of Premium Motor Spirit (PMS).
Despite pleading not guilty, the court found the EFCC’s case, led by counsel Seiduh Atteh, to be compelling, supported by documentary evidence and witness testimonies.
The case was initially heard by Justice Adeniyi Onigbanjo before being reassigned to Justice Dada, who noted in her judgment that the fraudulent scheme not only cost the government a significant financial loss but also undermined public confidence in Nigeria’s fuel subsidy regime.
Justice Dada sentenced both defendants to 14 years in prison and ordered the forfeiture of assets and bank accounts linked to the proceeds of the fraud. She also issued arrest warrants for two co-defendants, Oluwaseun Ogunbambo and Olabisi Abdul-Afeez, who remain at large.
The convictions conclude a protracted legal battle which began after the EFCC accused the convicts of fraudulently collecting a total of ₦1.48 billion under the guise of importing over 20 million litres of PMS into the country.
