The Lagos State Commissioner of Police, Ishola Olanrewaju Olawale, has allegedly removed the Divisional Police Officer (DPO) of Ijeshatedo, Mushin Division, for refusing to release criminal suspects caught with firearms.
According to an insider familiar with the incident, the DPO, identified as Matthew, was redeployed shortly after he received a phone call from an unknown individual demanding the release of the suspects.
The source revealed that three suspects were arrested on Sunday night and detained at the Ijeshatedo Police Division. By Monday, an unidentified caller believed to be a top politician who contacted DPO Matthew, ordering him to release the suspects.
However, the DPO, known for his strict discipline, demanded to know the caller’s identity and the reason for the release request. The caller abruptly ended the call, and all attempts by the DPO to call back proved futile.
A few hours later, the police commissioner reportedly called DPO Matthew, informing him of his immediate removal and replacement with a Chief Superintendent of Police (CSP).
The source further alleged that after Matthew’s removal, his replacement immediately ordered the release of the suspects.
“The Lagos Commissioner of Police removed the DPO of Ijeshatedo Mushin Lagos following an anonymous call demanding the release of suspects caught with guns,” the source said.
“DPO Matthew and his team arrested individuals found in possession of firearms. A suspected top politician then called, requesting their release, but the DPO insisted on verifying the caller’s identity”.
“Shortly after, the DPO was replaced by another CSP, who then released the suspects. The former DPO was directed to report to the Lagos Police Command”.
The source added that Matthew’s reputation as a disciplined officer likely played a role in his refusal to comply with the request.
Efforts to confirm the incident from the Lagos State Police Public Relations Officer, SP Benjamin Hundeyin, were unsuccessful as he declined to take calls, stating via text that he was unavailable.
However, a police source disclosed that there was no official signal regarding Matthew’s removal, as the directive allegedly came directly from the Commissioner of Police.
