Lawmakers of the Lagos State House of Assembly have arrived at the State High Court in Ikeja for the hearing of a suit filed by Speaker Mudashiru Obasa.
Obasa is challenging his removal from office by 36 lawmakers on January 13, 2025, over allegations of gross misconduct and abuse of office. The respondents in the case include the lawmakers and Hon. Mojisola Lasbat Meranda, who was elected to replace him after his removal.
Last week, Meranda stepped down, paving the way for Obasa’s reinstatement. She stated that her decision was in deference to the All Progressives Congress (APC) and its leadership.
During the court’s first hearing on February 20, 2025, Mr. Afolabi Fashanu (SAN) represented Obasa, while Mr. Femi Falana (SAN), Mr. Muiz Banire (SAN), and a team of lawyers appeared for 34 lawmakers. Additionally, Mr. Olu Daramola (SAN) and Mr. Dada Awosika (SAN) represented other House members seeking to join the suit.
Hon. Meranda was represented by a legal team led by Mr. Tayo Oyetibo (SAN).
In a brief ruling before adjourning proceedings to March 7 for the hearing of pending preliminary objections, Justice Yetunde Pinheiro ordered that all members of the Lagos House of Assembly be joined as parties in the case.
