A man identified as Basiru Hassan has died after stepping on an explosive device suspected to have been planted by bandits in Shiroro Local Government Area of Niger State.
The incident was disclosed on Tuesday by Zagazola Makama, a counter-insurgency expert focused on the Lake Chad region, via a post on his X handle.
According to Makama, intelligence sources reported that the explosion occurred around 5:00 p.m. on Monday, March 10, when Hassan, a resident of Unguwan Hayin Jadda near Pandogari, entered the Sarari-Mangoro bush to tap honey.
While moving through the area, Hassan accidentally triggered the explosive, which detonated instantly, killing him on the spot. His relatives later recovered his body and buried him according to Islamic rites.
Security agencies have since issued warnings to residents, particularly in bandit-prone areas, urging them to exercise extreme caution when navigating remote paths.
“The explosion highlights the growing threat of improvised explosive devices (IEDs) allegedly planted by criminal elements, particularly Boko Haram factions operating in parts of Niger State,” Makama added.
