Human rights lawyer Deji Adeyanju has urged President Bola Tinubu and Inspector-General of Police Olatunji Disu to investigate the shooting death of Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) member Nworie Christopher in Enugu and ensure those responsible face justice.
Christopher, from Affa in Udi Local Government Area, was shot during an attack on the NDC’s campaign office in GRA, Enugu, on October 10. He died from his injuries despite efforts by party leaders to save him. The party said armed thugs opened fire on a peaceful gathering at the office of its governorship candidate, Sir Christian Chinyeaka Ohaa.
In a statement, Adeyanju said no Nigerian should die because of political affiliation and that differences must never be settled with violence. “I call on President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and the Inspector-General of Police to urgently investigate the killing of a member of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) in Enugu and ensure that the perpetrators are brought to justice,” he said. He warned that political intolerance threatens Nigeria’s democracy and the fundamental freedoms of citizens.
On October 13, Ohaa led a party delegation to the bereaved family. The group included Deputy Governorship Candidate Chief Frank Omeje, State Chairman Engr. Ibuchukwu Obeta, State Secretary Hon. Emmanuel Chukwujekwu Nebo, Prof. Uche Akubue, Hon. Emeke Okeke and the State Women Leader.
Ohaa condemned the killing as part of a pattern of violence against the opposition in the state. “No election is worth a single drop of a citizen’s blood. Nworie Christopher went out to support a vision for a better Enugu. Today he is gone. His twin brother is left with an empty half of his world. His family is shattered,” he said through his media aide, Hon. Sampson Ukwu. “His mother is completely heartbroken. We will not be silenced by violence. We will not be intimidated. The blood of Nworie Christopher and all our injured members cries out for justice.”
The NDC described the October 10 attack as the latest in a series of incidents targeting its members. These include an armed assault on a ward meeting at Obuoffia in Nkanu West on September 12, in which eight members reportedly suffered gunshot wounds, as well as the tear-gassing, shooting and beating of supporters at the airport.
Adeyanju called on the authorities to treat the matter with urgency, conduct a full investigation and hold anyone found responsible accountable under the law.
