Governor Seyi Makinde of Oyo State has assured families of the pupils and teachers abducted in communities around Oriire Local Government Area that his administration is committed to securing their safe release.
Speaking during a visit to Ahoro-Esiele community on Saturday, the governor met with affected families, community leaders, and residents, expressing solidarity with them amid growing concern over the incident. He stated that the government shares their pain and is deploying every lawful resource available to ensure the victims return home safely.
Makinde revealed that security agencies have been working around the clock since the abduction occurred, with daily strategy meetings involving service commanders to coordinate rescue operations. He noted that the dangerous and unpredictable nature of the kidnappers makes it impossible to disclose sensitive details of the ongoing operation.
The governor urged the public to avoid politicising the incident or engaging in blame games, stressing that the immediate priority is the safe rescue of the abducted children and teachers. He described the kidnapping of nursery and primary school pupils as highly unusual, noting that such cases are rare in Nigeria.
While acknowledging the numerous suggestions from concerned citizens, Makinde emphasized the need for caution and responsibility in handling the situation to prevent further danger to the victims. He reassured families that the government would continue exploring all possible options to secure their release and appealed for calm, cooperation with security agencies, and prayers.
During the visit, emotional appeals were made by relatives of the abductees. Prof. Wole Alamu, husband of the kidnapped school principal and Dean of Renewable Natural Resources at Ladoke Akintola University of Technology, broke down in tears as he pleaded with the governor not to relent in the rescue efforts. He lamented that his wife had been featured in distress videos circulated by the kidnappers, describing the experience as heartbreaking.
Another resident, Mrs. Funmilayo Ojo, disclosed that four of her grandchildren and her daughter-in-law were among those abducted. Community members described the incident as unprecedented in the area and appealed for intensified efforts to bring all the victims home safely.
