A man identified as Joshua Nwafor from Nsokkara in Ezza South Local Government Area of Ebonyi State has allegedly beaten his wife, Charity Nwafor, to death over a disagreement about a tuber of yam.
The incident occurred in the couple’s home, where they had lived together for 17 years and raised their children. Charity was originally from Awkuzu, Onicha Local Government Area of Ebonyi State.
According to an eyewitness, the disagreement began when Joshua brought out a yam to be cooked for the family. Charity expressed her preference for roasted yam instead of the cooked one and proceeded to roast it herself. This reportedly angered Joshua, leading to a violent altercation.
“The man brought out yam to be cooked for the family, but the wife said she wouldn’t eat cooked yam and preferred roasted yam. She roasted the yam, which infuriated him. He dragged her into a room, locked the door, and beat her until she died,” the eyewitness told Daily Sun on condition of anonymity.
The eyewitness also urged individuals in abusive marriages to leave, saying, “Life has no duplicate. No matter how long a marriage lasts, if it becomes life-threatening, walk away quickly. Don’t worry about what people will say.”
The Ebonyi State Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Joshua Ukandu, confirmed awareness of the incident and promised a thorough investigation. “This is a sad incident. Let me confirm if the case is being handled by the command, but rest assured, whoever is found culpable will be charged accordingly,” he said.
The case is currently undergoing investigation.
