Abuja – The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has begun a sweeping nationwide operation to seize and destroy all alcoholic beverages packaged in sachets and polyethylene terephthalate (PET) bottles below 200 millilitres. The enforcement drive, which kicked off on Wednesday, July 22, 2026, marks the full implementation of the Federal Government’s ban on these products.
Operations are being conducted simultaneously across Nigeria’s six geopolitical zones, targeting markets, motor parks, retail outlets, bars, supermarkets, and other distribution channels.
NAFDAC enforcement teams have already moved against manufacturing facilities found producing the banned items in defiance of regulatory directives. The agency is now intensifying efforts to remove remaining stocks from circulation.
In a statement, NAFDAC Director General, Prof. Christianah Adeyeye, directed manufacturers, importers, distributors, wholesalers, retailers, hawkers, and transporters to immediately surrender any remaining inventory of the prohibited products. She warned that anyone found producing, importing, distributing, transporting, stocking, or selling the banned alcoholic drinks risks arrest, prosecution, and stiff regulatory sanctions.
“The banned sachet and sub-200ml PET bottled alcoholic drinks are illegal products that should no longer be found in circulation,” the agency emphasised.
The aggressive regulatory action is aimed at curbing underage drinking, substance abuse, and the easy accessibility of cheap alcohol, particularly among young Nigerians. NAFDAC described the move as part of a sustained enforcement and public enlightenment campaign designed to protect children, adolescents, and other vulnerable groups from the public health risks associated with these small-pack products.
While compliant manufacturers using approved larger packaging thresholds are not targeted, the agency stressed that the banned products pose significant health dangers and must be eliminated from the market.
NAFDAC has called on the general public to support the operation by reporting individuals or businesses involved in the production, stocking, or sale of the prohibited items. Citizens are also urged to refrain from purchasing or consuming the banned products and to promptly alert the nearest NAFDAC office of any suspicious activity.
The nationwide exercise represents one of the strongest regulatory interventions against alcohol in recent years and underscores the government’s commitment to reducing alcohol-related harm across the country.
