Kogi Central Senator, Natasha Akpoti, has alleged that Senate President Godswill Akpabio has maligned and victimized her for rejecting his advances. She made this revelation on Friday during an appearance on Arise Television’s Morning Show, claiming she has been denied legislative privileges as a result.
Akpoti accused Akpabio of deliberately blocking her motion in the Senate after she refused to engage in an inappropriate relationship with him. The allegations come amid a recent altercation between the two over seating arrangements on the Senate floor.
Detailing her experience, she said:
“The Senate President made a mistake by not allowing me to speak on Order 10. When a senator invokes Order 10, it means their privileges have been trampled upon, and they must be heard. However, instead of allowing me to speak, he ordered the Sergeant-at-Arms to remove me from the chamber and prepare for my suspension.”
Akpoti further claimed that the conflict between her and Akpabio stemmed from an encounter in December 2023 at his residence in Akwa Ibom. According to her, Akpabio held her hand while offering to show her around, telling her she would enjoy quality moments in his home. She alleged that despite her discomfort, the Senate President persisted, even in the presence of her husband.
She also recounted how her attempts to move a motion on anti-corruption practices at Ajaokuta Steel Company were repeatedly blocked.
“I listed that motion five times before it was approved on the sixth attempt. Each time it was listed, he would say, “Senator Natasha, we can’t take this motion”. When I confronted him, he told me, “You can enjoy a whole lot if you take care of me and make me happy.”
Comparing her ordeal to a student being penalized for refusing a lecturer’s advances, Akpoti insisted she has faced systemic pushback for rejecting Akpabio. She also referenced a nightclub incident, claiming the Senate President had previously suggested ways they could have fun together.
Akpabio has yet to publicly respond to these allegations.
