The Nigerian Bar Association has announced the death of Professor Alfred Bandele Kasunmu, SAN, describing him as one of Nigeria’s most distinguished legal scholars, Senior Advocates and elder statesmen.
In a statement issued on August 9, 2026, NBA President Mazi Afam Osigwe, SAN, said Kasunmu’s passing marked the end of an extraordinary era in the history of the Nigerian Bar. He noted that the late professor’s career spanned academia, legal practice, public service and mentorship.
Kasunmu served as Dean of the Faculty of Law at the University of Lagos and as Attorney-General of Lagos State. He was a Senior Advocate of Nigeria and founded Professor A.B. Kasunmu Chambers. The NBA said he made lasting contributions to legal education, jurisprudence and the administration of justice in Nigeria.
Osigwe praised Kasunmu for exemplifying the highest ideals of the profession through brilliance, integrity, humility and commitment to the rule of law. His scholarship shaped generations of lawyers, while his practice and public service left a lasting mark on the country’s legal landscape.
The association extended its condolences to the Kasunmu family, the Body of Senior Advocates of Nigeria, the Bench, the Bar, colleagues, former students and the wider legal community. It said his life remained a testament to excellence, service and dedication to the legal profession.
“Though Professor Kasunmu has departed this earthly realm, his legacy will continue to inspire present and future generations of lawyers,” the statement read. It concluded with a prayer for the repose of his soul and comfort for those mourning him.
