Members of the Nigerian Bar Association’s Section on Public Interest Litigation and Development Law (NBA-SPIDEL) visited the Maximum Security Custodial Centre in Port Harcourt, Rivers State, on 31 August 2026 to hear inmates’ legal concerns and identify cases where the association can provide assistance.
The team, headed by NBA-SPIDEL Chairperson Prof. Uju Agomoh, was received by the Controller of Corrections for Rivers State, CC RM Williams FCAI.
During the visit, the lawyers spoke with inmates about their complaints and legal difficulties. They specifically asked for the names of those held with an option of a fine and others seeking help to obtain bail. The delegation said it would review the cases carefully and take appropriate legal steps for those who qualify, within the bounds of the law.
Beyond legal support, the group also pledged to help with basic welfare items needed at the facility.
Controller Williams thanked the NBA-SPIDEL team for its focus on inmates’ welfare, legal rights and rehabilitation. He said partnerships with the legal profession remain essential for improving access to justice, reducing overcrowding in custodial centres and helping former inmates reintegrate into society.
