A senior official from the Nigeria Data Protection Commission called for privacy and data protection to be built into digital identity systems from the start, speaking at GITEX Nigeria 2026 in Abuja.
Barrister Babatunde Bamigboye, Head of the Commission’s Legal, Enforcement and Regulations Department, represented National Commissioner and CEO Dr Vincent Olatunji on a panel titled “Trust by Design: The Future of Africa’s Digital Identity Infrastructure.” The event took place at the Abuja Continental Hotel.
The gathering opened with remarks from Senator Shuiab Afolabi Salisu, Chairman of the Senate Committee on ICT and Cybersecurity. Kashifu Inuwa Abdullahi, Director-General of the National Information Technology Development Agency, delivered the keynote address.
Bamigboye pointed to the advances Nigeria has made in its data protection framework since the Nigeria Data Protection Act, 2023, came into force. He stressed that privacy safeguards must remain central as the continent expands its digital identity infrastructure, and that public trust depends on treating data protection as a core design requirement rather than an afterthought.
He specifically called for Privacy by Design and Default principles to be embedded in new digital solutions from the earliest stages of development and deployment.
The Nigeria Data Protection Act, 2023, established a comprehensive legal framework for handling personal data in the country. The Commission continues to promote compliance and stronger safeguards as digital public services expand.
