Senator Ali Ndume, representing Borno South Senatorial District, has raised concerns over the United States Agency for International Development (USAID), calling its operations in Nigeria suspicious and in need of thorough scrutiny.
His remarks follow allegations by U.S. Congressman Scott Perry, who recently claimed that USAID funds were being used to support Boko Haram and other terrorist groups. In response, the Nigerian Senate has summoned key security officials, including the National Security Adviser, Nuhu Ribadu, and the heads of the National Intelligence Agency (NIA) and the State Security Services (SSS), to investigate the claim.
Speaking on Arise TV on Thursday, Ndume supported calls for an investigation, arguing that USAID’s activities in Nigeria lack transparency and avoid oversight.
“USAID is a major U.S. agency meant to assist other countries, but the way they operate is highly suspicious. They don’t allow oversight, and they go to places where nobody else goes,” he said.
He also alleged that some of USAID’s work is done in secret, making it difficult for Nigerian authorities to monitor their activities.
“They claim to be helping, but in reality, we are not even allowed to ask questions. Now that the U.S. itself has suspended some of USAID’s funding over wasteful spending, this is an opportunity for us to investigate,” Ndume said.
With mounting concerns over terrorism financing, the Nigerian Senate’s decision to probe USAID’s funding is expected to uncover whether the allegations hold any weight. Security agencies will now assess the extent of USAID’s involvement and whether its programs have unintentionally aided insurgents.
