Badejo-Okusanya outlined these priorities as she assumed office. She specifically warned that lawyers found responsible for insulting or abusive posts directed at colleagues will face disciplinary action. Such cases, she indicated, would be handled transparently through public proceedings.
Her stance responds to the growing use of social media by lawyers to voice opinions. While the platforms allow free expression, they have also become venues for personal attacks that the new leadership believes undermine the dignity expected of the Bar. Freedom of expression, according to her position, does not exempt members from the duty to maintain professional conduct.
The administration places professional discipline, unity among members, and improved welfare at the centre of its agenda. It also aims to reinforce the NBA’s institutional independence so the association can better defend lawyers’ interests.
Badejo-Okusanya emerged as president-elect in the 2026 NBA election after securing 12,317 votes. She defeated fellow candidates Lateef Akangbe, SAN, and Olumuyiwa Akinboro, SAN. She succeeded Mazi Afam Osigwe, SAN, as head of the association.
The announcement comes amid ongoing debates within the legal profession about how to uphold ethical standards while preserving room for robust discussion of professional issues.
