The Niger State Independent Electoral Commission (NSIEC) has revealed that 805 candidates from 10 political parties will contest in the upcoming local government elections scheduled for November 1, 2025.
NSIEC Chairman, Engr. Mohammed Jibrin Imam, made the disclosure in Minna during the official flag-off of election campaigns. He confirmed that political parties have been cleared to begin public campaigns, which will run until October 31, 2025.
Giving a detailed breakdown, Imam said 69 candidates are vying for Chairmanship positions, 66 for Vice-Chairmanship, and 670 for Councillorship seats across the 25 local government areas of the state.
The 10 political parties participating in the polls include:
- All Progressives Congress (APC)
- People’s Democratic Party (PDP)
- Social Democratic Party (SDP)
- Zenith Labour Party (ZLP)
- Labour Party (LP)
- Booth Party
- National Rescue Movement (NRM)
- Action Alliance (AA)
- Accord Party
- Action People’s Party (APP)
Imam urged all political parties and their candidates to strictly adhere to the commission’s campaign guidelines.
“I want to remind participating parties that their utterances and conduct during campaigns will play a major role in ensuring a peaceful and credible election across the 25 LGAs,” he stated.
He also noted that while campaigns proceed, NSIEC will continue with other scheduled activities, including the publication of the notice of polls and the formal announcement of November 1 as the election date, set for September 1, 2025.
According to the chairman, political parties are expected to submit the names of their agents to the respective electoral officers in each local government area.
He acknowledged that while preparations have been largely successful, some parties have shown a lack of seriousness regarding the electoral timetable. However, he maintained that the commission remains on track with its overall schedule.
