Abuja — The federal government is intensifying efforts to engage state governors and emergency responders as it pushes for the full adoption of 112 as Nigeria’s national emergency number.
The move follows a high-level meeting on Tuesday at the State House between Vice President Kashim Shettima and a delegation from the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC), led by its Governing Board Chairman, Chief Ibikunle Olorunnimbe.
The initiative gained momentum days earlier when the National Economic Council (NEC), chaired by the Vice President, formally approved 112 as the unified emergency number across all tiers of government and relevant agencies. The decision forms part of broader measures to strengthen Nigeria’s emergency management framework and establish a coordinated national response system.
During the meeting, Vice President Shettima directed the NCC to develop a comprehensive roadmap for implementing a single, unified emergency number in line with global best practices. He also instructed the Commission to work closely with the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), leveraging the agency’s expertise in disaster management, relief, and rehabilitation.
Shettima assured the delegation of sustained government support, stating that funding for the project would be mobilised through the National Economic Council and private sector partnerships. He further emphasised the need for strong commitment from all emergency responders to ensure the initiative’s success.
In his briefing, Chief Olorunnimbe informed the Vice President that the NCC has already established approximately 35 Emergency Communications Centres (ECCs) across the country, supported by modern technology.
He thanked the Vice President for his leadership and for facilitating engagement with the Nigeria Governors’ Forum (NGF) and other stakeholders. Olorunnimbe stressed that success would depend on full cooperation from state governors to maintain the infrastructure and ensure optimal functionality of the centres.
“Everyone is expected to buy into this initiative and recognise its importance. It is a patriotic duty to our country to ensure that anyone in distress can get the help they need in a very swift manner,” Olorunnimbe said.
He highlighted the critical role of all response agencies including the Nigeria Police Force, state ambulance services, and NEMA urging commitment at every level to prevent delays in emergency assistance.
The development signals a significant step toward modernising Nigeria’s emergency response architecture, aiming to deliver faster, more reliable help to citizens in times of distress.
