Former Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi, has described Nigeria as a crime scene where criminality is now disguised as governance.
Obi made the remark on Friday while reacting to revelations by the Senate Committee on Public Accounts, which exposed a staggering ₦210 trillion discrepancy in the audited financial statements of the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL).
The committee, chaired by Senator Aliyu Wadada, raised the alarm during a hearing on Wednesday over conflicting figures presented by the NNPCL, particularly relating to accrued expenses and receivables between 2017 and 2023.
According to the 2023 audited financial statements now in the public domain, the NNPCL reported ₦103 trillion in accrued expenses and ₦107 trillion in receivables—amounting to a ₦210 trillion financial gap.
Reacting via his X handle, Obi wrote:
“It is with the utmost sadness that I once again reaffirm what I have consistently said: Nigeria has become a crime scene.
How else can one explain the recent revelation by the Senate, which uncovered the audited accounts of the NNPC from 2017 to 2023, showing ₦210 trillion in financial irregularities—₦103 trillion in so-called ‘accrued expenses’ and another ₦107 trillion in unaccounted receivables? No documentation. No accountability. No consequences.”
He further compared the figures to Nigeria’s total national budgets over the same period, which amounted to ₦88.01 trillion—less than half of the alleged financial discrepancies.
“This is not just another scandal,” Obi said. “It is a damning confirmation of a country held hostage by institutionalized corruption. This is a criminal betrayal of the Nigerian people and a grave danger to the future of our children.
No responsible nation can function this way. This criminality disguised as governance must be stopped and dismantled to build a better Nigeria.”
