Three Nigerian police officers have been dismissed from the force after an internal disciplinary process found them implicated in the killing of Anthony Obodo in Port Harcourt.
On 2 September 2026, the Third Vice President of the Nigerian Bar Association, Mrs. Ini Irene Pepple, visited the office of the Rivers State Commissioner of Police to discuss the outcome of the Orderly Room Trial. The Nigeria Police Force confirmed that the three officers, including Assistant Superintendent of Police Fabian Banabari, have been dismissed. They will also face criminal charges in court arising from the incident, which occurred in the Agip/Adageorge area of Port Harcourt.
The dismissals followed a meeting held on 31 August 2026 at the Rivers State Police Command Headquarters. Commissioner of Police Olugbenga Adepoju met representatives of the Nigerian Bar Association, members of the deceased’s family and other stakeholders. The three officers were brought before the group, allowed to give their accounts of the events and questioned about the circumstances of Obodo’s death. The commissioner described their conduct as unprofessional and pledged transparency in handling the case.
The Orderly Room Trial marked the end of the police force’s internal disciplinary proceedings. Criminal prosecution is expected to follow as the next stage of the justice process.
The Nigerian Bar Association said it would maintain its involvement in the matter, citing its commitment to human rights, the rule of law and efforts to curb extrajudicial killings. The update was issued by Dr. Prince Azubuike, National Publicity Secretary of the association.
