The Nigerian government has commenced the payment of February salaries to federal civil servants.
Bawa Mokwa, spokesperson for the Office of the Accountant General of the Federation, confirmed this development in an exclusive interview on Thursday.
He stated that all necessary disbursement requirements had been met, ensuring that workers would begin receiving payment alerts before the end of the day.
“February salary payments will start trickling in today (Thursday). Everything has been put in place to ensure that civil servants receive their salaries on time. By Thursday, workers will start getting alerts,” Mokwa said.
He also dismissed concerns about potential shortfalls in February salaries, assuring that payments would be made in full.
Addressing previous concerns over January salary discrepancies, Mokwa explained that the perceived shortfalls were due to the conclusion of arrears payments from September 2024.
“There was a misunderstanding. What some workers considered shortfalls in their salaries were actually adjustments. Between September and December 2024, civil servants received minimum wage and bonus arrears, which temporarily increased their earnings. However, from January, those arrears were cleared, and salaries returned to normal,” he clarified.
Earlier, the Joint Public Service Negotiating Council (JPSNC) had attributed the January salary discrepancies to a system error in the Integrated Payroll and Personnel Information System (IPPIS).
It was reported that in July 2024, President Bola Tinubu signed the N70,000 new minimum wage bill into law.
