The Nigerian Navy has intercepted 1,306 bags of smuggled foreign parboiled rice during a recent anti-smuggling operation in the Majidun area of Ikorodu, Lagos State.
The operation, which took place on April 12, 2025, was conducted by personnel from the Maritime Component of Operation AWATSE. It was led by Commodore Paul Ponfa Nimmyel, who said the seizure was made following actionable intelligence on the activities of suspected smugglers attempting to evade a security checkpoint.
“Our Quick Response Team engaged the suspects in line with the Joint Task Force’s Standard Operating Procedures. The operation was carried out with utmost professionalism, and no casualties were recorded,” Nimmyel stated during a media briefing.
The seized rice was officially handed over to the Nigeria Customs Service, Western Marine Command, Apapa, on April 16, in line with the Harmonised Standard Procedures for arrest, detention, and prosecution.
In a related development, the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS), Kirikiri Lighter Terminal (KLT) Command, has transferred custody of nine containers filled with expired and counterfeit pharmaceutical products to the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC).
According to Comptroller Joy Edelduok, Customs Area Controller at the KLT Command, the 40-foot containers had been abandoned by their importers for several years, making enforcement difficult. She noted that the importation violated provisions of the Nigeria Customs Service Act, 2023.
