A United States-based women’s advocate, Stella Okengwu, has alleged that there is a coordinated effort against Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan within the Nigerian Senate.
Okengwu made this claim while reacting to Tuesday’s Senate plenary, where Senator Natasha submitted a petition accusing Senate President Godswill Akpabio of sexual harassment.
As previously reported, the Kogi Central senator formally presented the petition on the Senate floor, alleging not only sexual harassment but also abuse of office and deliberate obstruction of her legislative duties by Akpabio.
In response, the Senate President denied the allegations, while the Senate Committee on Ethics, Privileges, and Public Petitions dismissed the petition, declaring it dead on arrival.
During an interview with Channels Television, Okengwu condemned the Senate’s handling of the issue.
“What happened today [Wednesday] is repugnant. That’s the best way to describe it,” she said.
“It seems as if the Senate has ganged up against Natasha. My advice to the Senate President is that, given the serious nature of these allegations, he should recuse himself. If she has proof, she should be allowed to present it.”
Okengwu also referenced past incidents, including Senator Dino Melaye’s controversial remarks to a former president’s wife, which she classified as sexual harassment.
“Ninety-five percent of women have experienced sexual abuse, but many cannot speak out because they fear they won’t be heard,” she said.
She urged the Senate President to step aside to allow a fair investigation, emphasizing that nobody is above the law.
