Troops of the Nigerian Army’s 17 Brigade, Katsina, in collaboration with the Air Component of Operation Hadarin Daji, have eliminated notorious bandit leader Kamilu Chiroma, also known as Buzaro, along with several of his fighters in Katsina State.
The operation, conducted in the early hours of Monday, February 17, targeted Buzaro’s hideout following intensified counter-banditry efforts across Northwestern Nigeria. Security forces had been focusing on dismantling terrorist strongholds responsible for recurring attacks on communities.
Counter-insurgency expert Zagazola Makama disclosed the development on Tuesday via his X handle, citing intelligence sources. According to Makama, military operatives launched the offensive based on actionable intelligence that Buzaro and his gang had fortified their positions around the hills, armed with sophisticated weapons and prepared to ambush advancing troops.
In response, an intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance (ISR) platform was deployed to assess the area, confirming the bandits’ movements and defensive preparations. Ground troops engaged the terrorists while fighter jets executed precise airstrikes, dealing a decisive blow to the group.
Makama reported that the bombardment caught the bandits off guard, neutralizing a significant number of Buzaro’s fighters. Sources at the scene confirmed that several motorcycles used by the gang were destroyed, along with a cache of weapons.
Following the airstrikes, ground forces moved in to clear the area, eliminating any remaining threats and securing the location. A senior military official described the mission as a major success, stressing that it had significantly weakened bandit operations in the region.
