The Jigawa State Police Command has dispelled fears of an explosion or fire outbreak following the crash of a petrol tanker in Ringim Local Government Area on Thursday, May 1, 2025.
In a statement issued by the Police Public Relations Officer, SP Lawan Shiisu Adam, the command confirmed that there was no explosion, fire, or fuel scooping at the scene of the incident.
The accident involved a Howa tanker trailer, bearing registration number Kano 549 BNK, which was loaded with 60,000 liters of Premium Motor Spirit (PMS). The vehicle was driven by a 50-year-old man, Muhammad Ali, from Yankatsari village in Dawakin Kudu LGA, Kano State.
According to the statement, the tanker was en route to Gujungu town in Taura LGA from Lagos when the driver attempted to navigate a traffic diversion near Zangon Kanya village to avoid an oncoming trailer. In the process, he lost control, causing the vehicle to veer off the road and overturn, leading to a fuel spill.
Upon receiving a distress call, the Divisional Police Officer of Ringim promptly led a team of officers to the scene. Other emergency agencies, including the Fire Service and the Federal Road Safety Corps, were also mobilized.
The driver sustained injuries and was immediately taken to Ringim General Hospital for medical attention.
To prevent any potential hazard, police officers cordoned off the area and diverted traffic away from the crash site. SP Shiisu emphasized that their swift response helped prevent fuel scooping and secondary incidents.
“So far, no explosion or fire outbreak has occurred,” the police spokesman assured, adding that the situation is under control and being closely monitored.
