Former Kaduna Central Senator, Shehu Sani, has criticized northern leaders for failing to advance the region’s socio-economic development during their time in power. He called on them to apologize to the people of the North and urged the region to support President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration to complete its full eight-year term.
Speaking to journalists at his residence on Monday, Senator Sani noted that the North has witnessed significant progress under President Tinubu’s leadership within just two years.
“For those of us from this part of the country, we recognize the progress made so far by this government. Those who had the opportunity to do better in the past and failed owe the people of the North an apology,” Sani said.
He warned the northern masses against being misled by sentiments targeting a government that, in his view, is outperforming its predecessor from the region.
“Our people should not be incited against a government that is delivering more than the one led by our own. President Tinubu supported a northern presidency for eight years. We must not let tribal sentiments cloud our judgment,” he added.
Sani also highlighted the historical support the North has received from the South-West, emphasizing the need for reciprocity.
“Since 1999, the North-West has produced two presidents—Umaru Musa Yar’Adua and Muhammadu Buhari. In both instances, the South-West gave their full support without serious resistance. Now, it’s time for the North to return that favor,” he said.
He argued that equity and fairness demand that the South—specifically the South-West—should be allowed to complete an eight-year tenure.
“If the opposition must field a presidential candidate in the future, that candidate should also come from the South-West. That’s what justice and fairness require,” he stressed.
Reflecting on the past administration, Sani noted that despite the dominance of northern figures in security leadership, the region continued to suffer from terrorism, banditry, and violence.
“Under the last administration, almost all heads of security agencies were from the North, yet terrorism wasn’t defeated. Banditry persisted in the North-West, and killings continued in Benue, Plateau, and other North Central states,” he said.
Sani’s comments come amid ongoing political debates about zoning, performance, and regional equity as the 2027 general elections begin to take shape.
