Peter Obi, presidential candidate of the National Democratic Congress, has promised to generate, transmit and distribute at least 10,000 megawatts of electricity if elected president in 2027.
Speaking at a town hall meeting in Enugu, the former Anambra State governor also said he would declare emergencies in education and the fight against corruption, while ensuring primary healthcare services reach every ward in the country.
Obi listed insecurity, hunger, unemployment and weak public confidence in governance among the problems that make the 2027 election decisive. He said Nigeria needed a leader with competence, capacity, compassion, commitment and character.
“Today, our country is suffering. Today, people are hungry. Today, our children do not have employment. Today, Nigeria is not secure,” he said.
On security, Obi declared that his administration would confront criminal elements wherever they operate. “As president of Nigeria, I will unite Nigeria. As president of Nigeria, I will secure Nigeria. We will deal with security,” he stated.
He insisted that public funds must serve the public good and pledged greater transparency in government spending and borrowing. “People must stop stealing public money. Public money must be used for public good. That is why I am making my commitment. We will be accountable, we will be open,” Obi said. He added that citizens would be told the purpose of any government borrowing and how the money was spent.
Electricity ranked high among his priorities. Reliable power, he argued, was essential to revive industry, create jobs and stimulate economic activity. “As I promised, we will generate, transmit and distribute at least 10,000 megawatts of electricity, because we want industrial work,” he said.
Obi also challenged President Bola Tinubu to spend at least 36 days travelling across Nigeria to explain his administration’s record over the past three years, including the use of nearly $100 billion in borrowed funds. He questioned the volume of the president’s foreign trips and said Nigerians deserved direct accounts from those seeking their votes.
He urged other presidential aspirants to move around the country, understand ordinary citizens’ difficulties and present clear plans.
Separately, political economist Professor Pat Utomi endorsed a possible Obi-Kwankwaso ticket. Utomi said research convinced him that a partnership between Obi and former Kano State governor Rabiu Kwankwaso could provide Nigeria with a new political direction. He called on voters to turn out massively, protect their votes and help bring about change.
