A chieftain of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Osun State, Olatunbosun Oyintiloye, has called on President Bola Tinubu to intervene and stop Governor Ademola Adeleke from proceeding with Saturday’s local government elections in the state.
Speaking to journalists on Thursday in Osogbo, Oyintiloye, a former lawmaker, argued that conducting the election would be unnecessary and potentially dangerous, as there is no leadership vacuum in the local government areas. He emphasized that the Court of Appeal had already reinstated APC chairmen and councillors, making the election redundant.
Expressing concerns over possible violence and bloodshed, Oyintiloye urged Governor Adeleke to seek legal resolution rather than proceed with an election that could destabilize the state.
“The six lives lost in different council areas on Monday, along with several others injured, are strong enough reasons to cancel the election. The state government must not endanger lives in the name of politics,” he said.
Instead of pushing forward with the poll, he advised the Osun State Government to approach the Supreme Court if it is dissatisfied with the Court of Appeal’s ruling.
Commending security agencies for their swift action in restoring peace, Oyintiloye reiterated the need for President Tinubu to persuade Governor Adeleke to suspend the election for security reasons.
“All we want in the state is peace, and anything that can jeopardize that must be avoided. Governor Adeleke must uphold the rule of law and protect democracy,” he said.
Oyintiloye assured that APC members in Osun remain committed to peace and constitutional order. He also condoled with families who lost loved ones in the recent crisis and urged residents to remain law-abiding.
