The All Progressives Congress (APC) in Osun State has officially withdrawn from the local government election scheduled for Saturday, February 22.
This decision was communicated in a letter dated February 17, signed by the party’s State Publicity Secretary, Alao Kamorudeen, and addressed to the Secretary of the Osun State Independent Electoral Commission (OSSIEC).
A copy of the letter, obtained by the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Thursday in Osogbo, cited the February 10 Court of Appeal judgment as the reason for the party’s withdrawal. The ruling had reinstated APC’s previously sacked chairmen and councillors, making the election unnecessary.
The letter stated:
“Recall that the judgment of the Federal High Court in suit No. FHF/OS/CS/94/2022 was meritoriously nullified on February 10 by the Court of Appeal in Akure, in appeal No. CA/AK/270/2022, between APC and three others vs. the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and others.
“By the judgment, the elected officers have resumed office as allowed by the Appeal Court.
“The implication of the Court of Appeal ruling is that the seats are no longer vacant.
“In view of the foregoing, we hereby state that APC and all its candidates have withdrawn from the local government election scheduled for February 22.
“The election has now become unnecessary, superfluous, and unlawful following this development.”
The Court of Appeal’s judgment has fueled a power struggle between APC and PDP, with both parties laying claim to the local government secretariats across the state.
While the PDP argues that the ruling did not reinstate the sacked APC chairmen and councillors elected in 2022, the APC insists on their return to office.
This dispute escalated into violence on Monday, as party members clashed over control of the secretariats. The police confirmed that six people lost their lives, while several others sustained injuries during the unrest.
With tensions running high, security agencies are expected to remain on high alert as the state navigates this latest political crisis.
