A prominent member of the Peoples Democratic Party, Okechukwu Osohua, has dismissed the recent PDP convention held in Ibadan, Oyo State, describing it as an informal gathering rather than a legitimate political event.
Speaking on Channels Television’s Sunrise Daily on Tuesday, Osohua compared the meeting to a Christmas carol and insisted it had no legal backing.
“In my view, it was simply a gathering of friends. I can even call it a Christmas Carol. It was not recognised by law and therefore cannot be considered a convention,” he said.
The PDP faction held the event between November 15 and 16, during which the group, supported by Governor Seyi Makinde, announced the expulsion of several high profile members including the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, former Ekiti State Governor Ayo Fayose, and Samuel Anyanwu.
They were accused of anti party activities, further deepening divisions within the PDP. The faction later issued certificates of expulsion to Wike and the other affected members.
Osohua rejected the move, arguing that the decision was driven by personal interests rather than party principles. He questioned the legitimacy of the certificates, saying the idea was completely foreign to any known party rule.
“That certificate of expulsion is strange to me. This is the first time I am hearing of such a document,” he said.
“Those announcing that they issued a certificate of expulsion should explain the legal basis for it. Which law gives them that power? Before any action can be taken, there must be a binding rule or legal provision that supports it.
“When a person joins the party, do you issue a certificate of entrance that would justify such a certificate of expulsion later? I have never seen it.”
Osohua added that during his years in politics, he had never witnessed a situation where someone is expelled and then handed a certificate to confirm it.
