As the leadership crisis within the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) persists, former Senate President Bukola Saraki has met with Oyo State Governor, Seyi Makinde, in a renewed effort to reconcile aggrieved members and foster unity within the party.
Saraki, who was accompanied by former Gombe State Governor, Ibrahim Dankwambo, described the meeting as part of ongoing consultations aimed at resolving internal disputes and forming a unified stance among the party’s leadership.
Taking to his official X handle, Saraki thanked Governor Makinde for the meeting, which took place on the same day as the First Lady of Oyo State’s birthday.
“Thank you, Your Excellency, Governor Seyi Makinde, for making time to meet with us today—even though it coincided with your wife’s birthday. Warm wishes to Her Excellency, Mrs. Tamunominini Makinde,” Saraki wrote.
He added, “Following today’s meeting, we remain cautiously optimistic as we forge ahead to secure a common position among the leadership of our great party. I’m currently in Oyo State with Governor Dankwambo, meeting with Governor Seyi Makinde, as part of our committee’s ongoing efforts.”
The PDP has been embroiled in a leadership and zoning crisis since 2022, primarily over disagreements on the party’s zoning formula. A faction of the party, including Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, and the G-5 governors—of which Makinde is a member—had opposed the decision to zone the presidential ticket to the North while the party’s then-National Chairman, Iyorchia Ayu, also hailed from the region.
Despite calls for balance and fairness, the PDP proceeded to zone its presidential ticket to the North, leading to the emergence of former Vice President Atiku Abubakar as the party’s candidate for the 2023 general elections.
Saraki’s recent engagements with key stakeholders reflect efforts to mend the rift and restore cohesion within the party ahead of future political contests.
