Abuja – Eminent stakeholders and concerned leaders of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) have reaffirmed Senator Samuel Anyanwu as the duly elected and substantive National Secretary of the party.
This decision was made public through a communique issued after a closed-door meeting held on Monday in Abuja, aimed at resolving the lingering crisis threatening the unity of the opposition party.
The meeting drew party chieftains and leaders from across various states. Reading the communique on behalf of the group, Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, said the reaffirmation of Anyanwu’s position followed extensive deliberations and was aligned with the judgment of the Supreme Court.
Wike noted that the meeting was convened to review the state of affairs within the party and address urgent concerns around internal democracy, equity, and justice. He blamed the crisis on the refusal of a few members to adhere to the PDP’s constitution.
Citing relevant sections of the constitution — including Sections 36(1)(a)(b)(c), 47(3)(5), and 48(1)(I) — as well as the definitive ruling of the Supreme Court, Wike stressed that only a properly constituted National Convention has the authority to remove Anyanwu from office.
He warned that the PDP was on a path to “self-annihilation” unless decisive steps were taken to curb the divisive tendencies within its leadership structures, including the National Executive Committee (NEC), National Working Committee (NWC), and the Board of Trustees.
“To arrest the party’s drift towards extinction, the PDP must immediately comply with the Supreme Court’s ruling,” Wike said.
“We, therefore, unequivocally reaffirm Sen. Sam Anyanwu as the duly elected and substantive National Secretary of our great party.”
He emphasized that only the National Secretary has the constitutional authority to issue notices for meetings of the National Convention, NEC, National Caucus, and the NWC. Accordingly, any notice or correspondence not issued by Anyanwu — including communications with the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) — was declared “null and void.”
The stakeholders also demanded that the acting National Chairman and the National Secretary jointly issue a formal notice to INEC, along with the agenda for the NEC meeting, as the legitimate way forward.
Wike reaffirmed the group’s commitment to the PDP and called on all members to uphold the rule of law and respect constitutional mandates. He urged them to resist any attempts to destabilize the party and support the ongoing efforts of the National Reconciliation Committee led by former Senate President, Sen. Bukola Saraki.
In a significant political move, the stakeholders also resolved that the PDP must unequivocally zone its 2027 presidential ticket to the South, citing the principles of fairness, inclusion, and federal character — especially following eight years under former President Muhammadu Buhari from the North.
Among those present at the meeting were former governors Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi (Enugu), Samuel Ortom (Benue), and Okezie Ikpeazu (Abia); the National Secretary, Sen. Samuel Anyanwu; and former Senate Minority Leader, Sen. Philip Aduda.
Also in attendance were former federal and state lawmakers, as well as zonal and state party executives.
