The death toll from the recent wave of violence in Bokkos Local Government Area (LGA) of Plateau State has climbed to 60, following the recovery of 40 additional bodies between Wednesday and Thursday night.
Recall that 10 people were killed in Ruwi village on March 27, 2025, while another 10 lost their lives on April 2, 2025, in coordinated attacks across multiple communities, including Mangor Tamiso, Daffo, Manguna, Hurti, and Tadai.
Confirming the development on Friday morning, the Chairman of Bokkos Cultural Development Council (BCDC) Vanguard, Farmasum Fuddang, stated that more bodies had been discovered by community members.
“We released the statement about the killing of 10 people in Mangor Tamiso, Daffo, Manguna, Hurti, and Tadai on Wednesday morning. Since then, we have recovered 40 more bodies. We even buried them around 7 PM on Thursday using torchlights. It was the community members who discovered the bodies of their loved ones,” Fuddang disclosed.
The attack, reportedly carried out by unidentified gunmen, has left Bokkos residents in mourning, heightening fears of further violence.
Meanwhile, troops of Operation SAFE HAVEN (OPSH), responsible for security in Plateau State, reported that they successfully repelled attacks by armed groups targeting several communities in Bokkos LGA.
According to OPSH Spokesman, Major Samson Zakhom, the militants attempted to invade Tamiso, Daffo, Manguna, Tadai, and Hurti but were overpowered by troops, forcing them to abandon key items, including an AK-47 rifle and six motorcycles.
“Traces of blood along the attackers’ escape route suggest possible casualties among them. On April 3, 2025, further clearance operations were conducted in Hurti, where troops encountered and engaged militants hiding in the mountainous region,” Zakhom said.
During the operation, security forces recovered a locally fabricated pistol, six rounds of 9mm ammunition, and four motorcycles. Zakhom added that efforts were ongoing to track down the remaining assailants.
In a separate operation on the same day, troops from the Forward Operating Base (FOB) Gashish raided a hideout in Barkin Ladi LGA, recovering a fabricated revolver rifle, 7.62mm ammunition, and a substantial sum of cash, though the suspects managed to flee.
Additionally, in Wase LGA, security forces, in collaboration with local vigilantes, neutralized one bandit and recovered an AK-47 magazine and a motorcycle during a raid on suspected bandits along Kampani Zurak Road.
“Operations will continue as part of ongoing efforts to secure Plateau communities,” OPSH stated.
As of the time of filing this report, neither OPSH nor the Police had released an official casualty figure for the Bokkos attacks.
