Former presidential candidate of the Labour Party, Peter Obi, has called on President Bola Tinubu to immediately suspend his ongoing retreat in France and return to Nigeria to address the worsening security crisis in the country.
Obi made the appeal on Wednesday via his official X handle, expressing concern over the rising wave of violence, particularly in Plateau, Zamfara, and Borno States. According to him, over 150 Nigerians have been killed in the two weeks since President Tinubu departed for France.
“Mr. President, domestic problems beckon,” Obi wrote. “I am compelled at this critical moment in our nation’s history to urge the President to return home and confront the alarming security situation.”
The former Anambra State governor lamented that while gunmen continue to unleash terror across various regions, including the renewed insurgency in Borno and escalating violence in the South East, the country’s leader is away in a “foreign land.”
“In the North-East, Borno State leaders are lamenting the resurgence of insurgency, with both troops and civilians being killed. The story is no different in the South-East—killings and abductions continue unabated,” Obi said. “In the Niger Delta, frequent pipeline explosions further reflect the depth of our national crisis.”
Criticizing Tinubu’s absence during such a critical time, Obi stated: “One wonders the purpose of a presidential retreat in a country like France—where peace has been secured by its leaders—while blood continues to flow daily at home.”
He emphasized that leadership requires presence, responsibility, and swift action. “The fight for a better Nigeria is not about individuals. It’s about governance that ensures every citizen feels safe and included,” he added.
Obi concluded his statement with a strong call for urgent action: “I urge Mr. President to suspend whatever he is doing in France and return home immediately to take responsibility. That is the leadership Nigerians seek. A New Nigeria is Possible.”
